Today the rad comes to us from StandardGoods in sunny Visalia, California. Tim and Amber Kanallakan are trying to bring home a special needs child from China, and rather than just ask people for money they decided to start making awesome, hand-made leather products. 100% of the profits are helping fund their adoption.
That in itself is pretty darn rad if you ask me. Did I mention Tim is also a Prosthetist and that they are looking specifically for a child that he can make an artificial limb for? And their blog is called "Dad will build your leg?" Am I crying? No, I just chopped up an entire onion. Yeah, that's what happened. But then they had to go and make some super awesome products to back it up.
Handmade leather products created at their dinner table. I love it when all this stuff lines up. For instance, they make a mean wallet:

As a general rule, I don't curse. But when I feel the need to utter an expletive my go-to choice is "Ball Jar Lids!"
Maybe I should back up.
You see, my wife is obsessed with Ball Jars - (or Mason or canning jars - whatever you like). You know, the kind with two parts to the lid: the flat part with the seal and the metal ring. And many a time during dish washing I become overwhelmed with them and shout/mutter/scream "Oh Ball Jar Lids!!!!" in frustration.
The glass jar I can handle. I like them. The lids - not so much. We keep everything in them. Any packaged food from the store gets put in them. Leftovers? You know it. Homemade grape juice? Check. And of course, we use them to drink out of. I bet you're wondering where I'm going with this.
"Hey, aren't you supposed to be telling me about some rad, mind blowing product?" I could argue that the humble Ball Jar in itself is a pretty mind blowing product, but I digress.
Cuppow! That's where I've been trying to go with this. Cuppow came up with a great idea for the canning jar obsessed family like ourselves. They got rid of the flat seal piece and replaced it with a drinking lid! Perfect for the kids. And the adults who like sippy cups. And really any time you'd like to take your glass jar without a lid in the car and not spill it.

About 3 months ago Ashley said to me, "You know what would be cool? If we did some designs that were reversed." Typical husbandry logical response, "Why would we do that? That means you couldn't read it." My powers of clear thinking were strong. Until she answered, of course (this is how most of our conversations go). "Well, what if the design said something inspirational like 'You can do it' or 'You got this' so that the person wearing it would be able to read it when they looked in the mirror? Like a little motivational reminder when they start their day."
Yep, that was a great idea. I wish I had thought of that! I floated the idea around to several good friend and they concurred. My logic was weak, but the idea was not. So, we set out to come up with some designs.
You're Worth it Hoodie
The first I sketched out on a plane headed to Portland. It turned out so well that we ended up using it as is - it's got a nice hand-drawn feel.

One thing that really excited us about starting Last Night Ago was the opportunity to give back. We decided early on that we really liked Rice Bowls' approach to feeding children in need and chose them as our first non-profit to partner with.
We're still in the early stages of bootstrapping this whole shirt thing and there have been a lot of costs on the front end so we haven't really had a ton of profit to give from this month. But thankfully my job at FortySeven Media and Ashley's furniture building/sign making/photography have been plentiful so we're going to be chipping in from those as well.
So! Our first official Last Night Ago donation to Rice Bowls is $200. According their website that's almost a whole truck of food. Wow! We're so humbled and thankful that we can help - even if it's just a little bit. And we couldn't do it without you guys! Thanks so much for your support.
P.S. If you'd like to help out Rice Bowls directly you can do that here.
